For small character fields, the performance gain is neglible (< 1.5%) for SELECT statements but very significant for Seek (approx 90%). However, we are talking about an increase from 0.0000128 seconds (integer) to 0.0000244 seconds (4-byte character).

These testes were done using a PII 300MHz and a table with 100,000 records.
