The problem with inaccurate page counts is most likely to occur when you have a group footer that's more than a couple of lines, and it spills onto another page. I don't remember if preview has this problem or not, but there's no guarantee with preview that the user views the last page before pressing the print button. For that reason alone, I wouldn't use preview to count the number of pages.
