Likewise, we have been very pleased with Media One Roadrunner here in Cambridge. Consistently get 1.5 megabits/sec downloads, often faster. Limiting speed is always the Internet itself. It's really amazing... as revolutionary or moreso than the microwave oven has been in my life (and that's saying a LOT!).
For those contemplating IP sharing and LAN-WAN setups via cable modem or DSL: Have seen very good results with both the UMAX and the Linksys broadband routers. The Linksys is probably the biggest bang for the buck. For $150, it so simplifies the process, compared to using a PC that has 2 NICs in it and must be turned on all the time, that it's well worth the money unless you already own a suitable box, and you don't mind the electricity/heat associated with having it on all the time, and you also like to tinker and cuss a lot.
For those with the desire to put in a home LAN but no options for wiring it, you might check the Proxim Symphomy wireless products. We get about 600-700 KBits/sec through it. Plenty fast for web access but for LAN-centric operations (such as via Netbeui) it is noticeably slower vs hardwired ethernet.
>Hi all,

>I've just finished configuring my development server for an ADSL line installed by a local telephone company in my old hometown in Roanoke, Alabama (my programming retreat). Man, is the UT screaming today!
>
>But I was screaming for awhile, trying to get my 2 network cards configured correctly -- finally found that I had mistakenly put a default gateway entry on the main network card, when it was needed only on the DSL Ethernet card. Only wasted 3 hours on that.

>But now, I can make up for it with super speed. I'll also be using the server here for client demos (hittable with an ip address). Now let's see -- what's a good HUGE download I can "ooo and ahh" over? Win2K SP1 & VStudio SP4 shouldn't take too long.
