I assume you are trying to prevent your Valid clause complaining about an invalid value.

My approach is to put "no data" checks into a routine OTHER than the Valid clause, calling this routine only at specific times (e.g. upon OK or SAVE button presses), with only "invalid value" checks performed in the Valid. I just accept that a wrong value has to be cleared before a CANCEL button would be usable. Does this make sense to you? (BTW, I use FPW 2.6 and so my comments may not be directly applicable to you).

Another BTW: I used to live in Daventry (1978 - 91), initially on The Grange then Stefan Hill. Nice place, but a bit quiet. Leamington is livelier (just wish I was too!).
