There have been numerous HUGE American organizations that have held their annual conventions in Canada. Off the top of my head I remember the American Medical Association, the American Bar Association, Shriners International.

I agree that there may be some hassles for the organizers (like customs clearances for displays and equipment) but it clearly is doable and involves little risk, business-wise or otherwise.

Vancouver is especially nice, but Montreal or Halifax or Toronto are equally interesting, with Montreal having the added benefit of the "feel" of a foreign country with its heavily French influences (and heavenly food too).
