I got the idea attending Calvin Hsai's session on COM servers at NOLA. This was for a web application report generator and I needed speed above all. Using VFP to fill an Excel spreadsheet with hundreds of records took too long (too many COM calls). With this approach (Excel/VFP COM/SQL Server), it takes about 1.7 seconds to generate the report (Dual PII 400MHz, 512 MB RAM).
