Of course it works. But, as you say, the fact that you must do it manually... And even if you had an automatic way to do it, I still don't like it... you must be careful to have a backup, not to compile it, etc. And the nastiest thing: the user can't build project/app/exe with Recompile All Files. And this is something I really don't like. So, it works more for you than for the users... :)
