It depends on the provider and the quality of the link. SNET offers two levels of ADSL service - Level 1, good for about 5 miles from the CO, is 144kbps out and upto 1.5Mbps inbound; if you're within about 10K' of the CO and the copper is up to it, they offer a Level 2 connection at 384Kbps outbound and upto 6Mbps inbound. They charge $39.95/mo and $79.95/mo, and an added $40/mo for static IP. The local cable company, ComCast, is supposedly going to offer their broadband service RSN at $49.95.
My biggest gripe is the PPPOe soft network adapter required to connect through SNET; does not play well behind either Win2K's Proxy or NAT service; I use WinGate with very little trouble, and being undeterred by spousal cable running restrictions, have CAT5 string out around the condo.
