Now I'm surrounded by engineers for the first time ever. It's a pretty straight environment compared to software or science. So I know where all of you would have ended up if you had stayed. You might have had to come and go at precise hours and wear a tie.
I think that, in the US, a lot of people end up programming because it's expanding, unlike the prospects for work related to science or defense (my current programming work for a defense contractor notwithstanding).
