The company I work for sells various applications to other businesses. With that in mind, we always use a very basic font during development, ie Courier New, Times New Roman or Arial. We also use a basic HP LaserJet 4 printer driver.
From what you've said, you may well be using a font or driver that has codes that other printers won't recognise, thus it'll make a guess at which font to use & its more than likely thats why your seeing the output formatted incorrectly.
So, in the main it's best to avoid developing for a particular printer.
