The reason why the CD needs to be present is to verify that you own a copy of the game. If you want the least amount of CD ROM drive access, do a full install of the game so all the data is on the hard drive. It will then only access the CD ROM to verify the CD is there.
Why do you think your drive will be harmed if it's reading the CD?
