That could be because of the protocol you are using. I recommend using TCP/IP. It's the fastest, most easily maintained protocol (IMO).

As for the UNC problem, AFAIK, UNC is a Microsoft service and you need to have the Client for Microsoft Networks installed as well. Otherwise, you have to use the mapped drive approach.
