As I remember, there's a USB-equivalent of a crossover or null modem involved; rather than dinking with a USB network, there are a couple of neat solutions that exist now that will let USB equipped PCs connect to an EtherNet - the ADS USB Ethernet Starter Kit includes the cables and USB-10BaseT adapters to connect two PCs with USB ports together, along with a 5 port 10BaseT EtherNet hub. It runs about $120-140 locally, and Internet vendors like CDW and InSight carry it (in stock at CDW). I also have a client who used a DLink USB-10/100BaseT adapter to attach an older Compaq PC that had USB but no open slots to their Fast EtherNet LAN; while it's not like a 100BaseT connection, it's on a par with a 10BaseT card, and doesn't need a slot; just Win98, Win95 OSR 2 v 2.5, or Win2K - AFAIK, no NT or reliable earlier Win95 support is likely based on the lack of OS USB support; the DLink card needs the OS to supply full USB capability. The DLink adapter runs about $80 by itself. I've hooked up a friend's system to my Fast EtherNet here using it, and got it running by RTFM and installing the usual networking pieces; it took about 20 minutes from the time we opened the box to joining the LAN and sharing the Internet connection using the Wingate client software. The USB LAN connection was definitely faster than the ADSL connection I use; there was no appreciable difference in throughput when downloading a file through the USB connection to my LAN than for the same download on a NIC-based system. It was nowhere near as fast as the NIC within the LAN; I'd estimate it gets 2-8Mbps peak, depending on the USB chipset and other USB devices on the USB port, and my real results are more like a sustainable 100-300KB/sec, and if other USB stuff is attached, it competes for the USB bus; if you use USB speakers or scanners or drives or printers, they're competing for USB bandwidth...

It will also offer a side-benefit to developers; if you normally check the performance of an app based on resonse from a LAN, the USB-EtherNet setup gives you some idea of the capability of a WAN link (without some line delay issues). And then consider that what you're seeing is what would happen with only 1 user on the WAN - IOW, it'll show you the best response

>>Hi All,

>>This isn't a VFP question, but I was hoping that someone here could help. Is it possible to transfer files between computers via USB? I have a laptop running Win 2000 and my desktop on Win 98, both have USB ports. I bought a cable to connect the two, but can't fiqure out what software I need to use to transfer files. Direct Cable Conection doesn't offer USB as an option.
