HP's printer drivers are notorious for leaving the CPU's FPU/MMX registered in an unstable state after calls to the Windows GDI. The most common workaround is to use a compatible driver from an MS-supplied operating system distribution rather than the HP supplied driver; as an examle, I commonly use the MS-distributed HP 5si drivers for netowrked HP 405x series printers using the PCL driver, simply because the HP drivers will cause problems. I'd suggest isolating the problem to the printer driver - emporarily switch to the MS-supplied HP LaserJet Series II printer driver, about as vanilla and stable a driver as exists today, rather than the HP driver; if the problem goes away, then you've isolated the problem to the driver and can explore how to proceed on that basis.
If you're using one of HP's GDI (Windows-only) printers, you probably won't suceed in fixing the problem.
