In report designer window, select Title/Summary on Report menu and add summary band.

Now declare a variable (for e.g. rn_total)using Report-Variables option, in value to store enter the name of field (for e.g. customer->balance). and in calculations select sum radio button.

Now in the summary band of report add a field with value of rn_total).
