From NT or Win2K, it's trivial to use an IP address as a machine name; you can map a NetBIOS name to an IP address through any number of mechanisms from Win9x (if push comes to shove, you can use an entry in LMHOSTS if you can't have either a WINS or DNS server do the job for you.)
