I suppose you could "cheat" a bit on this if you could get a hold of the SQL Server 2000 Beta. It's somewhat stable and, last I checked, very cheap.

I used to manage MSDE using a copy of SQL7 installed in another machine, but now MSDE is installed in a customer network, without SQL7 license, so I need another trick.
