Certain printer drivers reset the floating point unit to use software error trapping and the driver never resets it back the way it found it. _fpreset() resets the FPU, thus preventing the error. See the Microsoft KB article Q183522.

I don't think this is your problem, though. The FPU/printer driver problem throughs and exception 10h, not the infamous C0000005 error. _fpreset is worth trying, but don't get your hopes up. Your better bet is to upgrade to at least SP3.
