There's no barcode software to 'read the barcode', for wedge devices, just trigger the CCD/laser, or swipe the wand, and it reads the data just like you keyed it. Like into a text box in an application. Not exactly difficult. You have to read the docs for your barcode reader to see if anything else is needed; with most wedge device, they just snap in-line with the keyboard.
