I have experienced the same problem and have lost work before I knew what was happening.
The best explanation I have is that its got something to do with the "Write Cache" on your disk drive(s).
One option is to turn off the Write Cache and see if this problem goes away. But there's a catch. Many disks apparently don't have the capability to 'remember' the setting, and the next time you boot your PC, the Write Cache is back on.
There is an article on MSDN that discusses this. Just do a search for Write Cache and Windows 2000 and you'll find it.
