>I have a field that has max of 7 chacaters, but I am only using 5 right now so I just alltrim my data as I save it to the field. I added an index to use rushmore on this field now it keeps adding in 2 extra spaces into each record of the entire table. Now when my user types in this number and my where statment and a scan for trys to compaire it doens't match. The strange thing is it is kind of intermitten. I tried to put a alltrim into the where statement, but that doesn't seem to work.

VFP always uses fixed length fields (except for memos and generals). If you defined the field as seven characters, it will always be seven characters.
