>Does anyone know why the HP supplied printer drivers are less stable than the MS supplied equivalent? I've frequently noticed lots more GPF's and other instabiliy issues on W/S's after a HP supplied driver is installed -- and not just during FP or VFP sessions.

Yes; HP doesn't adhere to a rule that reqiuires the driver to return the FP/MMX registers to a known state, with the result that apps which do not reset the state of the register themselves after a call to the GDI may fail because the register state is invalid. Hence the problem. Calling _fpreset() after each GDI call or migrating to VFP6 SP3 or 4 fixes some but not all problems.
