Evan,

>Is it just me or is Microsoft doing the right thing with their .NET strategy? It has interoperability and standards written all over it.

Well, by letting the "cat out of the bag" by promoting CLR and SOAP, and by submitting C# and CLR to ECMA for standards approval, they've lost control to a degree over what will happen.

Here's an interesting article from InfoWorld about OMG linking C# to CORBA, that illustrates the point:

http://www.infoworld.com/articles/hn/xml/00/08/15/000815hncsharp.xml

However, one of the best paragraphs in the print version was left out in the online version:

"Microsoft is sort of like the Dutch boy with his finger in the dike -- once you go a little bit open, you open up the possibility of going a whole lot open," said Dana Gardner, a Boston-based analyst at Aberdeen Group. With CORBA interoperability for C#, "Microsoft could be opening up the citadel of Windows to a whole new world of interoperability," Gardner said.
