By default, just putting the hot-key will allow you to get to the menu item by pressing ALT, then pressing the hot-key (two keystrokes). To get it to work with the ALT+Key combination, click on the Options button for the menu item you want in the Menu Designer. Then, click in the Key Label text box and press the ALT+Key combination you want.
