Craig;
You are correct - do anything you can to enhance your skills. Not everyone can afford to learn every development tool that exists. Still, I like to use the right tool for a job. The problem is the market, clients and employers dictate what you will use in all too many cases.
My advice to all: Look at the market and what it is doing, learn new technologies and update your skills and you should not be obsolete. Here in the San Francisco Bay Area there seems to be a very noticeable shift away from Microsoft and towards Java/Unix. At a recent job fair in Santa Clara, out of 1000 companies that were hiring, two advertised Microsoft skills as a requirement. One for VB and the other NT Server. The rest was Java/Unix.
