Only on the server. Conversion from a FoxPro Memo field to a Text field was causing the problem, the workstations issued a different command that did not create any conflict. There is a tech sheet on that subject on Microsoft's web site, although it was rated around 9% of relevance to the keywords entered, it was in fact exactly to the point (The title was something like "Memo to SQL-Server text field conversion error").
