Is there a way to change that? When I do an align with more than one object it does not seen to do it. Sometimes it seems to change size instead of align. Am I missing something simple?

Turn off "Snap to grid". In fact, the CR manual recommends you do this. Setup a guideline (this is called a TAB in Word). Then, align the objects with it. I will say that aligning objects is one of the weak points in CR, but it is better in version 8.
