The first implementation one is faster because
(1) only one call to RGB()
(2) I can easily write more efficient Assembly code for the first implementation (and the VFP team probably did it too)!!

When debating what is faster, I often use my old 8051 Assembly knowledge to decide what is likely faster. Ah, the good old days...
