I have just recently bought an ActiveX (IO.OCX) from www.jspayne.com, and it seems to work just fine. I'm using this to get data from a magnetic card reader connected to the serial port. OK documentation and a VB project example that shows how to use it. Found this one to be easier to use than Mscomm.ocx.

BTW, found the company by doing a search here at UT, where someone else recommended it.
