We've discussed this now. There may not be a definitive resolution as to how IT Factory/David Short obtained the mailing list; Liz Olsen of FPA does not believe the source was from anywhere inside Advisor, despite the renewal/address/subscriber coincidences, but they are investigating the matter fully, and are very concerned about it. One thing we could certainly all agree on, no one at FPA would officially endorse the mailing of these advertisements, it would be sheer business lunacy.
