In addition to NET SEND, WINPOPUP used to ship with Win9x. In addition, several Win32 mechanisms such as named pipes and mailslots can be used to provided inter-process messaging even among remote systems without the need for MSMQ; they're covered in detail in the MSDN Library, and I've played with implementing them using CLSHeap to provide polled monitoring of pipes within a VFP app. Any number of third-party ActiveX products are available, too - I'd start at CNet's activex.com site.
