Most barcode scanners use a serial interface and come with examples of how to read from them. In fact, a lot of them work by sending the results as if they were being typed. In that case, generally, you would have the user sitting in a UPC field (UPC = Universal Product Code) and activate the scanner then.
You can create barcodes using a laser or receipt printer with a barcode printer font, which are available all over the place as freeware or shareware. I think there are some examples of this here in the Files section.
