A few questions:
1. Intranet or Internet?
2. Which browser/browsers and version/versions?

If you were doing an application using only IE 5 or later I would suggest using style=position:absolute for each object within the table, including the table itself and define every thing required. That is what I use and it gives me what I need. I have a captive audience - a large corporation (General Moteors and Toytoa) and the standard is IE 5 so I can do things Netscape cannot.
