Craig..

In your presentation last night, somebody brought up the issue about dealing with 1 to many relationship and how you return that data. You mentioned using a hierarchical (shaped) recordset.

My question to you is how much experience do you have in working with heirarchical recordsets? In my experience, they are OK for presentation. However, the same issue arises when you try to update through the recordset. It simply is not reliable. This gets to the question.

How would you recommend handle the crud operations with data in an n-tier setting?

FWIW, I know the answer to the question. However, I am not the one who gave the presentation. So I will leave it in your hands to address this question. In your reply, don't gloss over the details. I thought this was an important topic that should have been covered in more detail. If you are going to talk about n-tier to a "data crowd", you cannot escape the topic of data and all the permutations that go along with it. In your response, please be as detailed as possible for the benefit of those listending in.

Those that have had to write and deliver n-tier apps have had to deal with this situation. Most definitely, it is not a trivial problem. Solving these sorts of issues and being to articulate solutions such as these is what separates the the wheat from the chaff. This is stuff that people need to grasp.

In other words, less theory and more on how you really get this stuff to work.

>During last night's n-tier lecture, we began a discussion about create COM components in VFP. There are some important things that we didn't get to. I'd like to do an "Introduction to COM" lecture on Oct. 18 to cover the stuff we didn't get to.
