It has been long I switched to 'word.application'. I can't remember the details. Instead you could use TogglePortrait (it's a toggle and I don't remember how to get current).
OTOH if you're not targeting word versions older than word97 you could simply use word.application. Word.application itself has a WordBasic object. You could mix VBA and Wordbasic code using it (not all wordbasic commmands work or work the way they do before though).
