Doug
Having made the NZ-UK trip twelve times in the last 2 years, and having flown with United/Singapore Airlines/Cathay/Malaysian/Qantas/KLM/Air New Zealand/Thai in an attempt to find the "best" way, I now choose to go via Los Angeles. Not being able to fly direct adds a few km to the distance...
Having flown >500,000 km in those two years, if anybody is interested my favourite "long haul" carrier is Cathay Pacific followed by Air New Zealand if you are flying Business or First. Air NZ is a partner in the Star Alliance with United, if you fly United US-UK you may be on an Air NZ plane- as I will be on 20 September heading back to NZ, passing wistfully past LA and the short hop to Florida where Devcon takes place just a few days later... I almost wish I could find a way to just stop and attend.

"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
