Allan;

My view point is Microsoft will do what ever is in its best interest. Dropping Visual J++ and Visual Basic Script are realities from Microsoft that we will soon experience. We may wake up tomorrow and find the same fate has befallen Visual FoxPro.

Here in the San Francisco Bay Area there is very little work for VB or VFP. Web development is very important using Java and Unix based operating systems. I am sure this trend will be felt by the rest of the Nation and then the world, in due time.

My advice is to study the market, keep an open mind and learn all you can about what is in demand. Leverage your skills and you will be successful. I love VFP, but had to learn VB and web development. Because of my dBaseII/ FoxPro skills over the last 18 years I realize what has to be accomplished to create a successful project. Using other languages for development requires learning different syntax and how to approach a solution. Nothing is impossible but it could take longer. That is fine as I get paid for my work and let the gods (lower case 'g' as they are really demi gods at corporate IT) make the decisions about what tools to use.

As for myself, if I were doing the same thing every day it would get boring very quickly. VFP has been good to me but I am not 'going down with my ship'! Anyway, I have another life as a flamenco guitarist. Now that is fun!

Hasta pronto y ciao

Tom
