I assume you're talking here about
physical (distributed) n-tier design and not just logical n-tier, which can be built all in the same physical package.
And plenty of us are in our right minds when using VFP tables on the back side of web and other distributed applications. There is something to be said for moving to SQL Server if the load is going to be extremely heavy, but VFP tables perform very well for many web apps.
