The project manager pulls in whatever it needs no matter what you do with it. I went through a similar situation that you are, trying to get it to leave things out. It won't work.

Maybe you could try making the parent classes read only on an OS level (just a guess, don't know if that will work or is desirable).

Or maybe think about using Visual SourceSafe (I've got it on the brain now) and restricting their rights there.
