I wrote an email program using MAPI about 3 years ago and apparently it remains in the top 50 downloads here. So I guess it's still useful.

Check the files section for Email/Fax Procedure PRG in the API section.

It's really simple and reasonably easy to use. It functions well with MS Exchange. I haven't used it in a couple of years,so if you need help, you'll have to bear with me.
