Here's what I do: if the thread has a bazillion replies, it's probably long since transformed to something that's not even remotely technical anymore, so I ignore it. Even if a thread
is still technical, if it has more than six or so replies, the question has probably already been answered in a satisfactory manner, so I move on. If I miss the occasional thread that could have benefitted from my input, it's not like the depth of technical knowledge here is so shallow that anyone's missing out if I don't reply.
