I ran into a similar problem on my system recently. I installed VFP 5.0, in addition to my VFP 3.0. My computer is connected to a Netware 3.xx network and the system login script had been configured with an environment var to point to a config.fpw file on the server. I had my login script changed to point back to my c:\vfp directory. When I installed VFP5, it looked in this directory when I ran it, found my 3.0 resource file and config.fpw. For some reason, after this, I couldn't run 5.0, it would just hang on me. After I located the source of headache, I turned RESOURCE OFF in the registry, started 5.0, and tried to turn on RESOURCE and point it to my 5.0 directory. I ended up with the same message.
Solution: I copied foxuser.dbf and foxuser.fpt to my 5.0 directory, USE'd the dbf in 3.0 EXCL, and ZAPped it. When I started 5.0, it asked if I wanted to convert my 3.0 resource file to 5.0. Answered OK and AWAAAAAY I GO...

If anyone has a simpler way, please feel free to correct me. Sometimes the simplest things are right under your nose, and out of sight...
