I haven't ever used AFD Postcode, but you should be able to pass an object.

What sort of object is being passed in the VB example?
The datatype mismatch error may not be coming from the object but rather a property on the object that the VB DLL is trying to read.
Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
