Are you attempting to Archive data or backup the database?

If you are attempting to archive, I would just determine the archive parameters and select the records out to a mirror copy of the data files.

OTOH, if you attempting a data backup - and cannot take the system down for a normal backup - you may want to look into Dynazip. I used it before, and it works well.
