I am using NT on a Novell network, but all queries run locally. I have a PIII Dell machine with 128 Mb of ram with no other apps running.

Have you used SYS( 3054, 1 ) before your queries to determine their optimization level.
What operating System are you using?
If you are using NT 4 check out Foreground App Performance boost in System in Control Panel.
Do you have other Apps running at the same time, that could be run on a different PC or rescheduled?
Get more ram,
Get a faster CPU
Get faster hard disks (if not selecting out of a dbf on a server),
Switch from 10Mbps to 100 Mbps Network Card and Hub.
Switch from an ISA to PCI,
Switch from IDE to EIDE
Switch from EIDE to SCSI
Switch from SCSI to SCSI II
Switch from SCSI to UltraWide SCSI.
Switch from VFP to SQL Server, Oracle, DB2, etc.
