Joe,
You make good points from the technical standpoint, but I haven't heard any success stories about Delphi on Linux, have you?
Delphi's problem was that when it was created, Phillipe Kahn and his towering ego (do things the Borland way or else) got in the way of making it a dominent language. If you recall, in early version, you needed custom database drivers (didn't support ODBC) and all sorts of other stuff like that because Borland was avoiding using MS standards at almost all levels.
I wanted very much to like and use Delphi prior to '96 or so, but it was not to be.
And if you want xBase on Linus, I believe that the company that Inprise leased the development rights to is working on a dBase for Linux.
>Methinks that Delphi is not a paradigm of success that VFP should be modeled
>I am curious as to why you think this? Delphi is a robust, stand-out product for Windows development. It is built on lightning-fast compiler technology that has been around for a long time, and the product is reaching a very mature version 5.

>Now, if you are calling into question Delphi's backing (i.e. the instability of Borland/Inprise/Whatever), that is another matter entirely. Considering that VFP would have the world's largest and most dominant software company backing it, I don't think the Delphi weakness (it's maker) would really matter, eh?
