Hi Alan,

The MSComm control is a good way to do it if the serial protocol for the scale is well-documented. MSComm can either run event-driven or via polling the device so there is some flexibility. The downside to MSComm is that it assumes some basic familiarity with RS232 communications and it's documentation is lacking. The upside is that you already have it sitting on your computer.

Lookup "MSComm control" at MSDN or in the MSDN Library for more information.
