Rod, John or Jim would best be able to answer that but the non-COM version needs WC if you are going to web-enable DataClas. With DC-COM, you do not need WC. AFAIK, all you need to implement DC-COM is your NT Server and SQL Server. While WC can query data from any source, it is mostly[?] used to serve VFP data to browsers.
As for bottle-necks, your limiting factors become hardware [server] and infrastructure [the wire] unless you write bad code in the business rule hooks.
