I really don't think it is IE 5.5. I've been using 5.5 for quite a while and do not have a problem with popup ads. However, I do know that some shareware 'finance' their software by selling ads and then they install software that pops up these ads during use of the browser. I cann't remember the name of the one that I encountered, but it probably doesn't matter because more than one shareware system may use it. Anyway, I was able to 'uninstall' the popup by removing it and the shareware program through the software add/remove option in the control panel.
