Yes, but I would continue to stick with multiple directories, each containing a complete data set (where a data set is the DBC and the set of tables).

Yes. That way, all the common tables (and their DBC) go in one place and the company-specific ones go in the various company directories.
Since you already have SDT, it can make this process very simple for you, including the conversion of the tables from 2.6 format to VFP format at client sites (something that isn't easy to do otherwise).
